TKD was a decent fighting system when first introduced into the US. Then over the years it became TKD light and because of economic reasons began to focus more and more on children using the black belt as a marketing tool.
Some of the techniques are still there, but the training is weak, and so is the application because we can't have injured kids. Bad for business.
I was a member of the Physicians Martial Arts Association in the 1970s. I just looked at the old Black Belt membership directory.
For the country, maybe one or two 3rd Dans, and the rest 1st Dan or 2nd Dan. Now I meet kids with 3rd Dans in TKD. It's very sad. Something very special has been lost.

There's no qustion it comes down to the standard of the fighter but if a guy can get his legs up it's an absolutely lethal weapon, whether it be in competition or in self-defence.
The only two times I ever had to use the TKD skills over 40 years the 'fights' were over within seconds and in early competition against both Judo and Karate practitioners, back in the early 80s, the fights were also over very quickly as they simply couldn't handle the speed and ferrocity of the high kicks.
